August Sketch Society Meeting

The August Sketch Society meeting was held yesterday at our local Java Junction. We knew that Rob wouldn't be able to make it, since he was off on a Swamp Walk. Seems like most of the other members were busy as well. I'm sure it wasn't the light rain that kept everyone away.

Mark Dail, John Beatty and I were the only ones who made the get-together, but it was still a fun couple of hours as well laughed, discussed movies, comics, politics and more. Mark brought the latest issue of Rough Stuff. It's a really cool magazine. Here's a link to it. Anyway, we got to talking about how the title could be misconstrued -- then that led to the idea of a talk show/pod cast: Rough Stuff with Bob McLeod. After than it was all over. Something as silly as saying "Rough Stuff with ---" and we were all laughing like we were back in middle school. Of course while all the nonsense talk was going on, Mark and Beatty were sketching away. I would have been live blogging, but the connection was down.

Big Beatty worked on the Batman comission that is pictured at the top of the page. Mark was inspired by a photo of Rachael Welch in "Hannie Caulder" and finished the piece above. I took the photo of Mark and Beatty lookin' all content after a nice sub sandwich lunch and a lot of laughs.

Our next Sketch Society meeting is scheduled for September 27th. Until then, it's... "Rough Stuff with Bob McLeod." If that made you smile, you'd fit right in at one of our get-togethers. If you didn't smile, then I guess you just had to have been there.

A Picture is Worth...

Hey Gang! Since John spoke about my photos in his previous post, I thought I'd share a few. We held our first Sketch Society get-together two years ago!

Back then it was a sporadic event, but because it was so much fun and everyone wanted to do it more often, we decided to meet monthly last year.

We chose that the last Saturday of the month as the date for our informal gatherings. Most folks roll in between 12:30 and 1 and the party usually breaks up around 4 or 5pm.

The group selected the Java Junction in Holly Hill as the meeting spot. The food is good, inexpensive and the place enjoys having us. Nearly everyone that shows up has lunch [the sandwiches are really good] or purchases a snack, so it's a great deal all the way around. We have a location with room to spread out, wireless internet and it doesn't cost a thing.

Because we're a loose-knit group, there's no membership, no dues, no one calls the meeting to order and no rules about what you draw. You show up when you want [most folks attend regularly] and draw / sketch / paint what you want.

We've had "meetings" where members were working on everything from Marvel Sketch Cards to political cartoons to figure studies for art class to whatever came to mind. The members of the group range from professional artists with years of experience to high school and college students just discovering their talents.

So, if you're at all interested -- our next meeting will be August 30th. You'll hear more about it here -- and we hope to see you there!

August "Sketch Society"

Hey Gang-

Looks like we are a 'go' for this month. As usual, we will meet on the last Saturday of the month.

This will be August 30th.

I'll be there probably around 11:30-12:30 depending on what I need to do before I can slip out to the Java Junction and get started.

I've added our Pal, Craig Zablo to become a moderator here also, so he's on board for posting and doing follow up reports of the meets and the people who showed up...and maybe some who didn't?

Craig also likes to take photos of the meets to pepper his reports with images, so he'll be posting up you, me, and anyone else he can get shots of. He's light on his feet so if you're camera shy, beware his ninja paparazzi style.

Anyway...hopefully we can continue and grow to a good core group.

I have plans of putting in some other meets, maybe evening time, later...but for now...let's do this!

Thx-
-JB
